Joanie Lemercier

As a young child, Joanie Lemercier would attend computer-assisted design courses given by his mother during the 1980s. This early education in CAD explains his great sensitivity to abstract forms and the geometric relationships between surfaces and the third dimension. Joanie Lemercier (originally from Rennes) moves to Bristol in the UK and becomes a VJ. In 2008, he founds the AntiVJ label jointly with the artists Yannick Jacquet, Romain Tardy and Olivier Ratsi. Seeking to escape from the traditional projection screen (flat, rectangular and inextensible), Lemercier develops an interest in stereoscopy, tracking, interactivity and mapping. He establishes his own personal studio in Brussels in 2013. Over the last few years, he has mainly been involved in developing intangible systems that enable him to ‘escape from the screen’, e.g. materials such as transparent screens or fine misted water droplets. Joanie Lemercier is keenly aware of the environmental impact of his work and regularly provides his expertise to militant green groups.
