Yann Nguema

A founding member of the trip-hop group Ez3kiel, Yann Nguema is both the bass player and responsible for the group’s visual identity and scenography. Drawing on a passion for interactivity, Ez3kiel produces a multimedia album in 2007: Naphtaline. Three years later, under the name Mécaniques poétiques [poetic mechanics], Yann Nguema brings the interactive tableaux on his DVD-Rom to life through ten dreamlike installations. He then decides to dedicate himself entirely to multimedia arts. Yann Nguema produces his first mapping project in 2013: 1311 Tetrahedres Screen, a scenographic arrangement which will accompany the performances of several contemporary music groups to celebrate the 20th birthday of Le Florida in Agen. Drawing on this experience, Nguema develops a uniquely personal way of working, which attracts considerable attention at the 2016 Festival of Lights in Lyon: his mapping projected onto the Saint-Jean Cathedral — Evolution — is awarded the Trophée des Lumières [Ndlt: Trophy of Lights]. To create his mappings, Nguema does not use 3D modelling of the monument but rather what he calls his ‘canvas’: the brick-by-brick drawing of the façade. This canvas looks like a fluid net, that can be kneaded or twisted in real time using a front-on laser or through leap motion.
