2023 VIDEO MAPPING DATA ANALYSIS

Since 2018, artists and festivals in the field of video mapping shared information about international projection mapping #contest and #lightfestival on this group LIST OF INTERNATIONAL VIDEO MAPPING OPEN CALL & CONTEST 2024.

24 festivals (contests, open call, awards, meeting) shared their informations in 2023 on this page and more specifically 14 video mapping contests !

Distribution of type of festivals since 2018

There are many video mapping festivals around the world. Some of them choose the artists directly and others go through a open call for projects. If it's difficult to quantify the total number of lights festivals with at least one video mapping on an international scale, almost all those hosting a video mapping contest go through this group.

Calls shared on the facebook group in 2023

Every year a new pattern emerges, and 2023 was dominated by Asia. Throughout all the competitions, there's a strong Asian scene, in particularly with the Thai studio Decide Kit winner of 4 awards in 2023 (first prize at Dublin Winter, public prize at Zsolnay Fényfesztivál Tamás Zádor, 3rd place at Shinning Shanghai, selection at Visualia Festival Marko Bolkovic , as well as the young collective The fox, The folks Fadjar Kurnia (first prize at SchlosslightSpiele 2023 in Germany). The ASEAN scene was also met together during the Bangkok Design Week to the initiative of Decide Kit, with many of Thai studios (Motion house), Kor.Bor.Vor, Sembilan Matahari) as well as Malaysian (Filamen) and Indonesian artists (The fox, The folks).

non-european countries awarded (top three and public prize) since 2017

2023 was also the year in which the 10 last winners of one of the oldest international videomapping competitions, the 1 Minute Projection Mapping, gathered in Japan for a special 'winner's exhibition' edition, in addition to the annual competition. What a symbol for this festival, which started out in the suburbs of Zushi on administrative buildings, and is now in the heart of Tokyo at the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery, after passing through the Odawara Castle. It was also my first participation in a competition in 2014 that gave me the desire to pursue this path and share all this information.

VPM - Shining Shanghai Festival 2023

2023 showed the emergence of a new artistic style, with the use of AI - the Genius Loci Weimar has even dedicated its annual theme. Among those with the most mastery of AI, we find the artist Vali Chincișan, winner of one of the façade during the new double contest in Dublin Winter, also winner of 1 Minute Projection Mapping 2023 and one of the three winners of Genius Loci Weimar. The Spanish collective VPM Javier Cañal Sanchez (first prize Shinning Shanghai) excels in its use, as does RE:SORB present on the podiums of 1 Minute Projection Mapping and Chongqing Light Festival.

European countries awarded (top three and public prize) since 2017

Eastern European countries are always well represented at competitions, with Romanian Vali Chincișan of course, but also EPER digital (winner in 2022 of 1 Minute Projection Mapping, this year winner of Estepona Crea in Spain and at Festival), Bulgaria's MP-Studio Marin Dimitrov (also organizer of a contest LUNAR festival) with their first prize during the first Chongqing Light Festival. in China, Poland with Clockwork (audience prize at 1 Minute Projection Mapping) and Ari Dykier present on the podiums at the Finnish festival MAPSION Niko Tiainen and at 1 Minute Projection Mapping.

The strong presence of Julia Shamsheieva, with her distinctive style, proudly representing Ukraine and a strong message for peace against the Russian invasion with her victory at IMAPP 2023 - where she represented the 1 Minute Projection Mapping. And already winner of the SchlosslightSpiele for 2024.

France is also present internationally with Simon Lazarus and the Post Signal collective (bringing together the incredible duo Neon Minuit : Dorian Rigal and Leon Denise and myself Jérémy Oury), winners respectively of the Jury Prize and Audience Prize at Lille's Video Mapping Festival Contest 2023, sending them to Lyon's Fête des lumières and to IMAPP.

IMAPP Tamás Vaspöri the supercompetition where you need to won another competition to participate also brought together Julia Shamsheieva, Multiscalar Reinaldo Verde the German winner of Zsolnay Light Art 2023, RE:SORB representing Genius Loci Weimar , Panagiotis Tomaras for the greek festival CosmoLights Projection Mapping and Post Signal for the french Video Mapping Festival.

And let's not forget festivals aimed at students or amateurs, such as the León Light Fest in Mexico or the La Fête des Images in France, which encourage the emergence of young artists.

festivals distribution around the world since 2017

I’m happy to see news festivals in China, Bulgaria, Malaysia and Ireland. These competitions are very popular in Europe and Asia. There's also one great competition in Brazil with SSA Mapping but there's still a lack of opportunities in north america and Africa.
