For the painting » Das Eismeer «, we are particularly interested in the sensitive conveyance of the content and atmosphere that correspond to the work.
Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings invite the viewer to introspective contemplation. His painted landscapes are offers to include our own emotional world in the process of interpretation. We take up his creation and make it accessible in a completely new way. In doing so, we treat the artwork very respectfully. The video projection and the soundtrack do not overwrite the image, but merely add another layer to it.

Just as in painting, light is our most important tool. In the technical preparation, we virtually recreated the landscape painted by Caspar David Friedrich in a 3D program. We then re-lit this digital reconstruction with moving virtual light sources. In this way it is possible to create the seemingly real shadows that are being projected back onto the physical painting.
We achieve something that breaks with the expected visual impression of a canvas – that is the added value compared to a screen that cannot obtain this effect.
The same technique can be used for other paintings or objects. With the right concept, we can also convey educational content or create a completely new work of art.
